About Coutts…
The tension between presence and absence anchors my work, explored primarily through light and, at times, through inscriptions. Using acrylic and oil paint, I create landscapes with depth, texture, and saturated colour, allowing the terrain to shift, breathe, and hold memory.
I paint landscapes as a storyteller: sometimes the scene speaks, sometimes it withholds. Working from both photographs and imagined worlds, I create environments in which human presence is subtly suggested or intentionally absent. The transient quality of human existence has become increasingly central to my work. These spacious compositions offer a sense of stillness, inviting viewers to slow down and immerse themselves in the quiet narrative that unfolds within the land.
Elements of magical realism emerge in my use of inscriptions, etched thoughts, fragments of text, and ironic observations that animate geological forms, inviting the viewer into a more intimate dialogue. I draw inspiration from Mamma Andersson’s narrative landscapes and Jenny Saville’s embedded lettering, using these influences to create layered surfaces that reveal new meanings as the viewer moves closer.
Recently, I graduated with a Master's in Fine Art from Birmingham School of Art and exhibited in the graduate show in August 2025, and took part in exhibitions at Stryx and at Birmingham Open 2025.
